“It’s been three years, nine months, and seventeen days since I truly began comprehending the difficulties of the immigrant experience.  All of the old conceptions, judgments, beliefs, and attitudes, were completely re-calculated when I landed 7,000 miles from my home, equipped only with twenty years of New York City street life.  The past few years have been a balancing act, a tug of war between letting go of one homeland and trying to embrace a new one.  What about my past can I afford to give up, without feeling as if I’m losing myself?”

Maybe it’s similar to the marathon runner, or the base-jumper, or the Monks taking a vow of silence.  We live our lives with varying degrees of sacrifice, internal struggle, and personal ideas of happiness.  Some pleasure arises from the calm of soft words, some from the melancholy of heartache, some from the distance of continents, and some from pushing the limits of our own bodies.

Why Doors.  Well, while reading Jack Gilbert’s poem “Burning (Andante Non Troppo)”:

“…The grand Italian churches are
covered with detail which is visible at the pace
people walk by.  The great modern buildings are
blank because there is no time to see from the car.
A thousand years ago when they built the gardens
of Kyoto, the stones were set in the streams askew.
Whoever went quickly would fall in.  When we slow,
the garden can choose what we notice…”


Often, New York feels like a city whose character flourishes from the people that live there rather than the houses they live in.  Often, Jaffa feels like a city whose character flourishes from the houses people live in rather than the people themselves.
